Name: Dwaine Harrison
Course attended: Level 1 Teaching Aquatics
Location of course: Grimsby
What is your background, i.e. are you new to aquatics or have you been involved for a number of years?
I had not been interested in swimming before and only became involved as part of my school’s Step into Sport progamme. As I’m only 16 years old I was in the Step In part and given some work with my local swimming club which uses the pool near to my school..
What were your reasons for attending the course?
It’s part of the my school programme and one that caught my fancy when given the options. Probably because I’d not been interested in swimming before, the course leader encouraged me to try it.
What did you find most interesting about the course?
Working with the primary school children – I thought that was brilliant and it let me see that I could build a relationship with the kids.
What part of the course was most beneficial to you?
All of it! It gave me a chance to work in an unknown sport and showed a side to me that I didn’t know existed.
How will being on the course help you achieve your goals?
I didn’t really have any goals before the Step into Sport stuff brought me to swimming. Now I know I can relate to little kids I’m thinking about doing other sport courses and getting my next swimming qualification when I’m old enough. I've got some goals now, perhaps this will help me become a PE teacher.
Has anything you have learned changed the way you work?
I didn’t have any idea about self reflection or seeing how my behaviour made others behave – now I do, so a whole lot has changed.
What advice would you give to those considering a UKCC course?
Dive into the unknown. It won’t hurt you and will definitely make you a better person!
